Acts 6:1-4 – 1Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews), because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
The twelve disciples used wisdom to know their main purpose and to remain functioning in it. They also knew how to execute the additional duties to ensure nothing was left incomplete.
Joyce Meyer gives excellent advice for this scripture in her Everyday Life Bible. These are her words, “These verses teach us that it is not wise to be involved in everything going on around us. Instead, we should select our activities carefully so we can remain calm, cool, and steady in life. I often refer to this as ‘choosing your battles carefully’. Had the apostles not recognized their need for help, their priorities would have remained out of line and their true assignment unfulfilled. They would have ended up frustrated, and just like the people they were trying to serve, they could have lost their peace, and therefore, their power. This is an excellent example for us to follow.”
There was a time in my life that a friend had to nudge me and tell me I needed to evaluate my priorities. These were his words, “If you are involved in too many things, then you are not effective at anything.” He was right. I was not able to give 100% to anything, including my family. That’s when I learned to turn toward God and ask Him what HE wanted me to do and what I needed to give up. Although that was indeed the first time I sought God in my priorities, it has not been my last. Life does get extra busy at times, but God honors our requests and provides the answers we need. When God shows us what HE is ordaining us to do, then it is time to say “no” to parts of our “To Do” list. It may even dictate extra prayer time for a supervisor that quickly delegates without a thought of a timeline. Still, with God’s directions, we have no need to question, despair, or doubt; for we know that God will provide for whatever He assigns us to, and it is our responsibility to trust and obey.
Allow God to direct your every step, He will make the crooked places straight and provides the strength, the energy, the wisdom, the time to get it all done if you put HIM FIRST! He may even send angels to help you along the way! How do I know?
In the season of my life that I referred to earlier, we were hosting a weekly community Bible Study in our home. Refreshments were always served and there were times that the last attendees left at midnight. My workload was so heavy that I would need to go into the office to complete payroll for the next day. Prior to beginning the tasks, I would say a silent prayer for strength and wisdom, and that all checks would be printed without complications. On numerous occasions I would see shadows swarming around the ceiling! The first time I encountered this I started to fear, but the Lord softly told me that He sent angels to help me with my work. A peace followed His voice, and thereafter, I yearned to see them floating around, helping me with the tasks at hand! I would always smile, for I knew that these times were God’s blessings, and all was well!
Let me encourage you to write down your priorities today. What are you spending your time on currently? Now look at your list and be honest if it lines up with what God wants for you. Are you neglecting someone or something? If needed, ask God to help you revise your list. Give Him first place and He will honor your request. He will answer you and show you how to put your list in order – the best way!
