While reading a daily devotional I was challenged to ask myself this question. What am I asking God for? Besides my requests in daily prayers, am I asking Him for to further His kingdom through me? Sensing it is a time in my life to reevaluate, I do not want my mind to be clouded with the chaos of this world. I want to know the heart of God and His desire for my life.
Realizing that Christians know the hour is late and the return of Jesus is imminent, there are many sensing the same thing. So, please allow me to share the devotion that started this process.
In 2 Kings we find the story of Elisha, the prophet. A well-versed figure in the Bible is Elijah, the prophet that you will hear more sermons about. But, oh Elisha, he wanted a double portion of what Elijah presented.
This devotion commented that “God saw the young man’s willingness to obey.” Number one: Does God see me as one ready to obey His command? Does He see you that way?
Then this devotion noted that “all bridges had to be burned behind him” to follow Elijah (1 Kings 19:19-21). Number two: Am I willing to drop anything that God desires for me to reach my potential? Are you?
While Elijah mentored Elisha in God’s ministry, Elisha became more determined to step in Elijah’s shoes when the day would come that he would be taken to heaven. Elisha was definitely tested when Elijah would tell Elisha that he was going to another city and told Elisha to stay put. Did Elisha listen? No, time and time again Elisha would follow Elijah wherever he went, replying, “I must go with you.” Number three: Am I ready to go wherever God leads me to go? Are you?
Many of you may be feeling a pull to God’s call. If so, God is drawing you to Himself. God is getting you ready to make a move. As Elisha did with Elijah, stay close to God, and follow where He leads.
Read with me this portion from the devotional, “It was the spirit of the old man that was stirring up the young man. If you see zeal in somebody else, reach out for it; it is for you. I am coming to realize that God wants all the members of His body joined together. In these days He is making us feel that when a person is failing to go on with God, we must restore that member.”
2 Kings 2:9 – …Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”
Number four: What am I asking God for? The Holy Spirit has been given to us and supplies us with unlimited power. In remembering that Peter’s shadow healed all the sick, again I ask, “What are we asking God for?” What needs do you see around you? We all have family and friends that need God’s assistance. You yourself may need a physical healing, an emotional healing, a spiritual healing. There are those that need breakthrough in their lives. God may be waiting for us to just ask of Him. He promises that healing and breakthrough are possible if we only ask and believe.
Does this stir you to desire a double portion of all you have seen and done before? Elisha received a double anointing from God for he did not relent. He persevered at any obstacle and obeyed the Lord.
The devotion ended with this remark, “You may say, ‘I have asked. Do you think God will be pleased if I ask again?’ Yes, do so before Him. Ask again and go forth. Then we will no longer be working in our own strength but in the Holy Spirit’s strength, and we will see and know His power because we believe.”
