I was recently reminded that the disciples had a time of uncertainty when they were crossing the Sea of Galilee and a fierce gale of wind like a tornado came upon them. They woke Jesus explaining, “Master, Master, we are about to die!” (Luke 8:22-24 in the Amplified Version)
I interrupt this story to identify ourselves in this moment. Yes, the storms in our lives are extreme at times. You currently may be facing the storm of your life. I pray your heart and mind will always seek JESUS first and foremost in every crisis.
Next, let us notice that although Jesus was with the disciples, they thought they were going to die in that storm. The Amplified Version states that a fierce gale of wind swept down (as if through a wind tunnel), and they began to be swamped, and were in great danger. The disciples were human and were looking with their natural eyes at the storm and their situation, they were drowning. However, they continued looking through their natural eyes and didn’t yet realize they had the same authority that Jesus did to speak to storms and overcome obstacles.
What did Jesus do when the disciples woke Him?
This scripture speaks volumes about our faith. After watching Jesus calm the raging seas to a perfect peacefulness, you can only imagine the increase in faith it made for the disciples.
There have been numerous times that the Lord has redeemed me and my family from the storms of life. Because of that, I can rely on Him for the ones to come, I know He will be faithful to provide, to protect, whatever it needed, “He will be”. That is how faith works. With each passing storm, our faith should grow deeper and deeper, knowing that Jesus is in the boat with us.
A scenario of this story and the reason for the title of this blog happened while my husband and I were on a cruise. Our ship became entangled within a storm one night while sailing and the ship itself began rocking from side to side, waking us from a deep sleep. We were discussing how large the storm must be and at once the cruise ship started leaning to one side, no longer rocking, but leaning as if it was going to topple over before finally coming back upright, only to shift to the other side doing the same thing. Dresser drawers were opening, and water glasses were falling off the shelves. We heard neighbors being awakened, some frightened by the uncertainty of the condition of the large vessel, uncertain of the reason behind the waves that were battering us. My husband and I prayed, believed Jesus would calm the storm and handle it all, and went back to sleep. The next morning while talking to other passengers, we learned that some were concerned about being tossed from their beds. I also remembered waking to find I had been rolled to the edge of my bed at one point in the night. My husband was recuperating from shoulder surgery and found himself rolling onto that shoulder multiple times throughout the night. But we remembered that each time the rolling tides of the waves awakened us, we lifted a prayer to the God of all creation for safety and quickly went back to sleep. God answered our prayers, and the sun came up over clear waters, beckoning of His great love.

What storm winds are blowing in your life today? Are you exasperated to the point the disciples were when they exclaimed to Jesus, “We are about to die?” Recently, I have witnessed fear in people’s faces and tears rolling down their cheeks as I listen to their stories of the uncertainty in their personal lives. I sense their burdens as I pray for them. I regrettably do not have the power to distinguish their anguish, but I can remind them of The One who can, and I hope to encourage you with the same answer.
